How to Stay Healthy Over the Festive Season (and Still Have Fun!)

The festive season is a time for celebration, connection, and indulgence—but let’s be honest, it can also leave us feeling a little out of balance. Between endless social events, decadent treats, and the whirlwind of holiday prep, staying healthy can feel like a challenge.

The good news? You can enjoy the season to its fullest while taking care of yourself. Here are my top tips for staying healthy, happy, and energised over the holidays—without missing out on the fun!

1. Nourish Your Body (and Your Soul)

The holidays are filled with tempting foods, and you absolutely deserve to enjoy them guilt-free. But balance is key!

  • Before a big event: Start your day with a nourishing meal rich in protein, fibre, and healthy fats to stabilise your blood sugar and keep cravings in check.

  • At gatherings: Fill half your plate with veggies and salad, and then add small portions of your favourite indulgences.

  • Stay hydrated: Festive drinks like cocktails and wine can sneakily dehydrate you, so alternate with water (a slice of lime or mint can make it feel special!).

2. Keep Moving, But Make It Fun

The festive season isn’t the time for rigid workout schedules, but staying active will help you feel energised and balance out all those holiday treats.

  • Go for a walk on the beach or in the park with family and friends.

  • Turn decorating or wrapping gifts into a mini workout (those squats while picking up decorations count!).

  • Try festive activities like dancing at parties or playing backyard cricket.

The key is to keep it light and enjoyable so it doesn’t feel like a chore.

3. Prioritise Rest and Recovery

Late nights and busy schedules can leave you feeling run down if you’re not careful. Prioritising rest is one of the most loving things you can do for yourself during this time.

  • Stick to a bedtime routine on most nights, even if it’s just 10 minutes of quiet time with a calming tea or meditation.

  • Schedule “me time” to recharge. A short afternoon nap, a yoga class, or even an acupuncture session can work wonders.

  • Remember, you don’t have to say yes to every invitation. It’s okay to set boundaries and save your energy for the events you’ll truly enjoy.

4. Support Your Gut and Immunity

With all the indulgent food and drinks, your digestive system can take a hit over the holidays. Keep it happy with these simple steps:

  • Digestive herbs and teas: Ginger, peppermint, and chamomile can help with bloating or discomfort after a big meal.

  • Probiotics: A high-quality supplement or probiotic-rich foods like yoghurt or sauerkraut can support your gut health.

  • Stay on top of hydration: Water and herbal teas help flush out toxins and keep you feeling your best.

5. Manage Stress with Intentional Practices

The festive season can be as stressful as it is joyful. To stay centred, try adding little moments of mindfulness to your day:

  • Start your morning with 5 deep breaths or a quick gratitude practice to set a positive tone.

  • Use calming essential oils like lavender or frankincense to ground yourself before heading to a busy event.

  • Book a holistic treatment like acupuncture to help reset your nervous system and release tension.

6. Make Time for What Matters

At its heart, the festive season is about connection, joy, and love. It’s easy to get caught up in the chaos, but remember to focus on the things that truly matter.

  • Spend quality time with loved ones doing simple, meaningful activities.

  • Say no to the things that feel more like obligations than joys.

  • Be present in the little moments—laughter over a meal, a shared sunset walk, or the feeling of gratitude for another year.

Have Fun, Stay Balanced, and Be Kind to Yourself

The festive season is about more than sticking to a “perfect” routine—it’s about finding balance and honouring what makes you feel good. Whether it’s enjoying a slice of pavlova, sneaking away for a quiet moment of reflection, or dancing the night away with friends, let this season be filled with joy and vitality.
